#WeAreGapInc: Meet Rachel

PeopleGap Inc.Comment

More than the clothes we create, Gap Inc. is defined by its people. Meet some of the talented people who make Gap Inc. great. #WeAreGapInc

What do you do for Gap Inc.?

I hang out with the Marketing and Creative teams at Athleta and help them stay on track. I like to say that I build the sandbox that they all get to play in.

What inspires you?

Kindness and courage. The runner who stops short of the finish line to help a competitor cross the line, the neighbor who makes soup for sick person down the road, the children who walk long miles to get to school or fetch water, my coworkers who take time out of their busy schedules to give back to their community.

What cause are you passionate about?

I’m a sucker for any cause that someone I love is personally connected to (and there are many of those). Additionally, I am passionate about serving/supporting/working with women and girls, especially in impoverished areas. When you help a woman gain access to better education and better resources you are increasing the livelihood of her entire family and future generations.

What’s your first memory of volunteering?

Second grade: I was a Brownie in the Girl Scouts and my troop conducted a food drive. I remember pulling the red wagon door to door to get donations. I even got my picture in the local paper (which helps the memory).

Favorite part of volunteering

Making someone smile. Laughter. Love. Community. Do I have to pick just one?

Any plans for volunteering this holiday?

I participate in Adopt A Family every year for two reasons: 1) My family was a recipient of a “giving basket”, similar to an Adopt A Family program, when I was a kid and it was so uplifting to know that someone cared enough to reach out to strangers to provide a meal and gifts – it made my holiday special and made a lasting impression on what giving can do, and 2) It is wonderful to get together with my coworkers and make an afternoon of shopping and holiday giving – we look forward to it each year. And this year, we will also give back to our Sonoma County fire loss community – they are in our hearts and we can wrap our arms around them.

Style personality

Everything I know about fashion I learned from Steve Jobs: black t-shirt and blue jeans. Unless I’m in Athleta workout clothes, of course J

Go-to outfit

See Steve Jobs reference above.

All-time favorite piece of clothing

Athleta Nusa Rollover skirt (we don’t make it any more)

Last purchase

Specialty’s Turkey and Cranberry on Seeded Sourdough. Delish!

What you’ve learned from customers

I learned that Athleta customers are women who do it all. They are athletes, executives, moms, wives/partners, team moms, family hubs, teachers, nurses, etc. Knowing that they are juggling just as many things as I am is reassuring and fuels me to do more.

Favorite Gap Inc. moment

Receivng the Be What’s Possible grant to implement a women’s leadership program with my non-profit partner: Una Vida. We head to the Dominican Republic in March 2018!

First job

Babysitting, but my first official job was at the Cinedome movie theater. I still love going to the movies!

Always puts you in a good mood

My son has a great sense of humor and knows just how to put a smile on my face.

Theme song

“Imagine” by John Lennon

Something people don’t know about you

I played semi-pro football (Santa Rosa Scorchers member of the IWFL)

What makes you most excited to come to work in the morning?

I look forward to checking off my “to-do list” every day (goal oriented), but mostly I enjoy my coworkers and they make each day exciting.

What makes your job unique?

I’ve been with the company for a long time and because of that I have acquired various bits of information and random tasks. I’m the go-to for facts and “how do we get x done” questions.

Why Gap Inc.?

Gap Foundation is the shining star for me. Knowing that the company makes such great efforts towards giving back, supporting community and driving for sustainability and equality keeps me engergized.
