This year, that equality was honored with the 2016 Catalyst Award to Gap Inc. for leadership in equality — a culture established by Gap Inc. co-founders Doris and Don Fisher in 1969, when they opened the first specialty retail store as equal partners.

Nearly 47 years later, Gap Inc. has expanded to five brands — Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta and Intermix — that can be found in hundreds of cities across the globe.

“I love the fact that every brand has its own unique look and its own unique mission,” says Athleta merchant Adriana Davila.
