“I have met some of my best friends that are as close as family here.”
Philip Malcolm | Field Visual Manager, Old Navy
What is your current role?
I am a Field Visual Manager in the East Territory for Old Navy. We connect the art and science of merchandising for our field teams and act as a link to HQ to provide support in execution of brand-directed visual strategies. In this role I support three markets.
How did you start your career and did you always know you wanted to work in retail?
I applied for a seasonal part-time position at Old Navy mostly for extra money and fun. Once I started, it was almost immediate; I felt that feeling when you know that retail is where you are supposed to be, and I wanted to work as hard as I could to stay there. It worked — 14 years later, I am still working just as hard and loving every minute of it!
What are the advantages of being a seasonal employee?
There are some immediate advantages of being a seasonal employee — great pay, employee discount, flexible schedules and an opportunity to meet some great people and make great friends. There is one GREAT long-term advantage to having been a seasonal employee: knowledge. When building my career with Old Navy, I know where we came from. I’ve seen what we can do and what we are capable of when we work together.
What has your career journey looked like with Old Navy?
I have been with Old Navy for 14 years. I started as a seasonal part-time employee, worked my way through every store leadership position to General Manager, and ultimately began to do work outside of my store. I will soon be supporting our global expansion in Mexico!
What advice do you have for someone considering a seasonal sales associate role at one of the Gap Inc. brands?
If you are someone who loves to work hard and play hard, then you will truly not be disappointed.
