Cities become canvases with Gap’s “Art of Blue”

Gap’s Back to Bluecampaign has given us new  TV spots. It has prompted a call to action on Twitter.

And now, it’s giving us art. A global art collaboration with local communities and local artists, to be exact.

The idea is to bring the Back to Blue concept to life on city streets around the world by featuring emerging artists curated by VICE. These artists have created ten outdoor murals that celebrate individualism, optimism and democracy.

Titled "Art of Blue," these murals appear in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Rome. If you see one, we encourage you to interact with the artwork (and us!) by posting photos on Twitter or Instagram (#backtoblue).

You can see videos, images and learn more about the artists at

This project was inspired by Gap Inc. founders Don and Doris Fisher, who have been supporters of contemporary art.

The project urges consumers to come along for the ride:

The city is a canvas. Every surface can be transformed into something beautiful – by simple marks, or by an unexpected masterwork. To jolt our imaginations as we walk or bike or ride by, or to form a cornerstone of the community. To help us both appreciate and escape the urban everyday…To make magic out of the madness of the city.
