An attorney by trade, Sheldon Fuller was always interested in real estate development, but he didn’t know where to start. After speaking with colleagues and members of the development community, Sheldon found the Ross Program. Then the Ross Program helped him find Gap Inc.
Founded 20 years ago by the University of Southern California and the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles, the Ross Program seeks to increase diversity among future leaders in real estate by teaching real estate fundamentals to hundreds of participants, who are professionals from a variety of industries. More than 700 participants have graduated from the program.
Earlier this year, Gap Inc. and the International Council of Shopping Centers awarded their first-ever scholarship and fellowship to two Ross Program students. Sheldon was awarded the coveted fellowship – 10-weeks working with Gap Inc.’s Global Real Estate team.
“When I learned that an internship was available with Gap Inc., I knew I had to apply,” said Sheldon. “It seemed like the right fit for me – I am really interested in fashion and love learning about the brands, and I’d have the chance to learn about retail real estate development from a major global retailer.”
Since beginning his fellowship on July 1, Sheldon has had the experience of learning what it takes not only to find and secure a location for a new store, but also the process by which a store is constructed and maintained. In his time with Gap Inc., he has worked with real estate field, real estate operations, real estate law and store development teams. At each step of the way, he is being guided by Gap Inc. Senior Vice President for Global Real Estate David Zoba.
“We set up an ambitious program for Sheldon to give him exposure to all facets of our real estate process, from beginning to end,” said David. “Sheldon embraced them all and has impressed our team and all of our business partners. This internship was a win-win for Gap Inc. and Sheldon.”
“I feel so fortunate to have so many great people instructing me and helping me understand what they do. I really applaud the company for building such a strong network and giving employees a level of support that I have never seen at other companies,” said Sheldon.
