A Gap Inc. lesson for students

When you’re just starting out, it’s tough to learn how to get that first job. What should you ask in an interview? What should you put on your resume?

I’m so thrilled to be part of Gap Inc. for Community Colleges, which helps answer those questions.

Here’s how it works.  Some of our general managers teach community college students about resume writing, interviewing, communicating, and time management.  Students learn in classrooms, plus mock interviews and even job shadowing.

Since we started the program a couple of years ago, it’s grown to 21 cities, and we’ve trained more than 1,200 students. And, of course, we’ve hired some of them. How cool is that?

This isn’t the only way we’re helping people get jobs, whether it’s with us or somewhere else in another industry.  We also help with a site called Jobipedia, where students ask Gap Inc. and recruiters from other companies questions about job hunting or how to thrive in that first job.  We’re also involved with Learn Up, which helps you become a candidate for jobs after completing online training.

Not to name drop or anything, but it’s all connected to the White House and the Aspen Institute's Skills for America’s Future initiative. And we were one of the first companies to get involved.  I’m so proud to be helping students, and so are the general managers.
