While many of us are fighting off cold weather, holiday shopping lines and classic Bing Crosby tunes (all at once?), people on another continent are enjoying warm summer days.
One good example: in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay – where we just opened our first Gap store. The opening represents a tidy milestone for our business, too: franchise market No. 40, a nice leap from a few years ago.
So, Uruguay. This is a country in the southern hemisphere that, in our parlance, we call “reverse-seasonality.” That means, their summer is our North American winter. So this Gap store launched with its fall collection of clothes – blazers and darker pants, but not the heavy jackets many of us see in stores now.
Our store is nicely placed in Montevideo, where a large majority of people in Uruguay live (and shop). Fun fact: today is the biggest shopping day of the year in Montevideo and, get this: the malls there will be open for 24 hours.
A final word about our company’s milestones. We expect to open our 300th franchise store by early next week … another indication of how we’re marching ahead with our global growth plans.
