China: From zero to 50 in 31 months

Seems like just yesterday that I was in China for the very first Gap store opening.

I’ll never forget the excitement and pride we all felt when new customers started streaming in the doors after our first grand opening at Hong Kong Plaza in Shanghai.

Now, just two and a half years later, I was privileged to help cut the ribbon (denim of course!) for No. 50. It opened on Friday, May 24, at Golden Eagle Plaza in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in China’s southwest — population 6.5 million

This also marked our 15th new city entry.

It was truly a special moment for me. Turns out it was also special for the brand as one of our strongest mainland openings to date. Hey, maybe I’m good luck?!

There aren’t many things more fun than helping open a store here…there’s cake and rousing speeches, lots of picture taking and a ton of positive, can-do energy from our China store employees.

I have to give a shout-out to our small but mighty Gap Outlet team, who let me be part of the ribbon cutting for our 6th Gap Outlet opening at a value center outside Hangzhou.  With balloons for the kids and our team decked out in logo product, it was a festive occasion. And if the opening weekend is any indication, it’s going to be a terrific part of our Outlet business.

The team told me I have to come back for No. 100, which doesn’t seem that far away now so I’m already counting down!
