We’re going big in China.
In addition to opening three Gap Outlet stores in a mere one week (with one more opening later this month), we have plans for about 45 stores by the end of this year. One after the other, we’re cutting ribbons underneath showers of confetti.
Not bad, considering we entered China just under two years ago — Shanghai's Hong Kong Plaza store was Gap's first official opening with three more stores quickly following in 2010.
The first Outlet store opened Sept. 22, in the Ningbo Outlet Mall, followed by a store on Sept. 28 in the Jingjin Florentia Village in Tianjin, and then a day later, the Qingpu Bailian Outlet in Shanghai. A fourth store is expected to open in the Beijing area later this month at the Scitech Premium Outlets.
The Gap Outlet openings — our first Outlet stores in China — speak to our ongoing global growth strategy. The country, which boasts the second-largest apparel market in the world, is a natural place for us to be.
Within a year of opening our first doors in Shanghai, we received online orders from every province and region of China, so we know families there see us as the place to go for American style.
Also, the value sector in China is relatively new, which makes Gap Outlet a perfect fit, expanding how customers in China experience the Gap brand.
Gap Outlet stores will be in six countries worldwide, and feature clothing designed just for the Outlet channel.
